Marimekko with everyday life as inspiration

The Finnish textile company Marimekko was established in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia in response to the lack of clothing in Finland after the war. Marimekko means Maris dress or in other words "simple everyday dress with no frills." The concept laid the foundation for the company despite the fact that the first Marimekko collections consisted of, for that time, daring designs and colors.

Armi Ratia had studied at the Ateneum Art school was convinced that its future lay in providing new textiles with motifs that are not already on the market. Today, Marimekko is a well established company that is widely known primarily for its textiles to both the furniture fashion.
