Marimekko with everyday life as inspiration

The Finnish textile company Marimekko was established in 1951 by Armi Ratia and Viljo as a response to the lack of clothing in Finland after the war. Marimekko means Maris dress or in other words, "simple everyday dress, without frills." This concept laid the foundation for the company despite Marimekko's first collections consisted of, in the meantime, bold prints and colors.

Armi Rati who had studied at the Art School Ateneum was convinced that its future lay in offering new fabrics with motifs that are not already on the market. Today, Marimekko is a well established company is widely known mainly for its textiles to furniture as well as fashion.

Initially designed the Armi Rati some pictures, but soon transferred to the creative creation Maija Isola whose career took off when she became head designer of Marimekko, a post she stayed on to 1987. Isola's original and bold design for both fashion and furniture textiles presented at the exhibition Design in Scandinavia, which toured the U.S. and Canada in the mid-fifties. Around the same time could Isola's textile designs also seen at the World Exhibition in Brussels. Several of the designs today are associated with Marimekko Isola works. The pressure Unikko which became a hit in 1964, became popular again and then resumed a Marimekko classic collection tygmönster from Isola for Marimekko's production 50th Anniversary 2,001th

With the help of Isola's innovative textile design made the Marimekko prints in both fashion and furniture. During the sixties became Marimekko also well known and popular globally, which gave the opportunity to launch a broader range of products abroad. The climax was reached when Jacqline Kennedy showed up in public dressed in Marimekko fabrics. Isola's colorful, nature-inspired designs were appreciated in Europe, America and Australia and her designs have been inspired and had a crucial role in the modern textile design.

A variety of textile artists and designers have designed for Marimekko of all time. Marimekko has always been open and taken advantage of young designers, new ideas and styles. The company has also designed for other such as the popular Marimekko bowl from Iittala.

Despite a wide variety of designers, I think it shows that Marimekko still stands by his early philosophy - the simple but beautiful in everyday life will provide inspiration for design.

An excellent example of the concept survives, I can see, Maija Louekaris design. Louekari was born in 1983 in Finland and has already an excellent CV. She was awarded including first prize in a design competition organized by Marimekko and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, for his press Hetki. Louekaris design exhibits a sense of place, time and place. She has designed several patterns for Marimekko and in her design, she portrays both crowds in urban areas and traditional Finnish environment.

Marimekko had its heyday in the 60 - and 70's, but has since had a reputation for quality and originality. In recent years the popularity has risen again and today they are at almost the same level as in their golden years. In early 2008, also hailed Marimekko by H & M for its simple but exquisite patterns. Marimekko producing no longer just colorful textiles. I think that today it is rather the design motif and of itself that is the focus. You do not need to buy a large piece of cloth to enjoy beautiful Marimekko's motives instead, you can benefit from design through both the kitchen as badrumsinrednig.

For me, a modern Marimekko design company with well-preserved traditions.
