Äggstolen celebrates 50th anniversary

Arne Jacobsen designed the world-famous Äggstolen 1958 which means that this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of this icon of Scandinavian furniture design. The manufacturer of the Egg, Fritz Hansen, launched its golden jubilee in 2008 with 999 copies of a limited edition. The limited edition is a sophisticated combination of leather and suede with a solar bronsbas. Each copy has a unique number and a short text about the history and origin of the seat design engraved.

The Egg

1958 Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, as well as much of the furniture. For its busy lobby, he created the egg and swan chairs, considered the world's first spin only upholstered chairs. This public area was the handmade äggstolen unique as it could be spun to thread direction or away from others if privacy was desired. A tilt mechanism allows for relaxed stay and the high back and flexure members is reminiscent of a traditional wing chair.
