Marimekko with everyday life as inspiration

The Finnish textile company Marimekko was established in 1951 by Pavilion and Armi Ratia in response to the lack of clothing in Finland after the war. Marimekko means Maris dress or in other words, "simple everyday dress with no frills." The concept laid the foundation for the company despite the fact that Marimekko's first collection consisted of, for that time, bold prints and colors.

Armi Rati who had studied at the Ateneum Art school was convinced that its future lay in offering new fabrics with designs that are not already on the market. Today, Marimekko is a well established company is widely known primarily for its textiles to furniture as well as fashion.
