Fish Oil And The Benefits Of Omega 3

by Michael Byrd

Fish oil is very important to human health and development. Many scientists believe that for much of human evolution our ancestors lived in coastal areas and got much of their nutrition from fish and especially shellfish. Recent studies seem to bear this out - showing that the human brain is composed of a significant percentage of oils who's only main source is fish.

There are many health benefits from consuming fish oil. It can help control blood serum cholesterol so preventing cardio-vascular disease as well as high blood pressure. It is also sometimes used in the treatment of depression, others have claimed that it can help with other mental problems, Alzheimer's disease and even improve people's memories.

Perhaps the most important ingredient in fish oil is omega 3. These essential fatty acids cannot be produced by the human body and are rarely found in plants, even then only in small quantities. It is especially important for pregnant women to take omega 3 since the development of the unborn child's brain and eyes may suffer if the mother does not consume enough.

As more studies have slowly begun to take place, a strong link has been developed between a lack of omega 3 and a variety of health problems. Among the diseases now begining to be associated with a lack of omega 3 are asthma and the now ever more occuring diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder. A correlation has also been noted relating an omega 3 deficiency during pregnancy to poor hand-eye coordination, poor social skills and decreased IQ in children.

Salmons, sardines and herrings are the fishes rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Heavy metals and toxic waste due to water pollution can accumulate inside fishes. Therefore, consuming these fishes in large quantities is not recommended. Another reason why it is not recommended is the high levels of retinol present in their livers. An active form of Vitamin A, retinol can be dangerous to humans if consumed in high doses.

For this reason it is recommended that people take fish oil supplements. They are available in capsule form those who take exception to the taste. They should be certified free of mercury and other dangerous metals and many have been purified so that the body can assimilate them more easily. Omega 3 benefits human health in so many ways that it is frightening to learn that only 2% of the US population is getting the recommend daily amount.

Fish oil controls blood serum cholesterol and helps in treating high blood pressure, prevention of heart disease and neurological conditions such as depression and memory loss. It also boosts resistance to allergies including asthma and Attention Deficit Disorder. An important ingredient, called omega 3 benefits pregnant women in helping the unborn child's proper development of brain and eyes. This fatty acid is extracted from sardines, salmons and herrings. Many companies market the oil supplements in capsules. Consumers should look for those that are certified as free from mercury and other harmful metals.
