Gel Candle Making: A Great Craft Project

by Fred Wild

You can make gel candles for fun or for profit. This has become a very popular thing being you can do it yourself with by-products of oil. These oil's are normally found at farmer's markets, flea markets, swap meets, and craft shows as a handcrafted item which is made by someone who is building a home-based business. The article here will provide you with an overview of exactly what gel candle making products are needed, a number of safety precautions, but no exact recipes for making gel candles.

Making gel candles is very popular with environmentalists, as 95% of the gel is made from mineral oil; the remainder is made from a powdered polymer which turns to gel when mixed with the oil and heated. There are three different thicknesses of polymer. CLP is the least thick, while CMP is thicker, and CHP is the thickest. Because of its thickness, CHP is the best to use if you want to use a fragrance or imbed anything into the gel.

Your supplies for gel candle making will include a double boiler, a good thermometer to test temperature of the gel for readiness, and a long metal or plastic spoon. Do not use a wood spoon because some say it will create unwanted bubbles. Of course you will need containers to pour your mix into.

To be safe, you must be sure to have heat resistant containers, often made of metal or glass. Moreover, you must have a fire extinguisher nearby which is good for chemicals. Fire extinguishers are available in two different kinds, and they're a good investment for a kitchen in any situation. You will also need to put on gloves, safety glasses, and an apron which is resistant to liquids and heat. If you take care with everything, these things probably won't be needed, but it's always best if you err on the side of caution.

You will probably want to add color and aroma to your original work. You must use a liquid dye and it is recommended that you purchase the dye with your polymer. Do not use clothing, food, or soap dye, as it could spoil the appearance and might make it burn improperly. If you use fragrance, you should make sure it is purchased from someone who has already tested the mix of gel and fragrance.

Your original creation, made with mineral oil, generally burns longer than conventional wax. With oil prices being so high, this could be a great alternative to wax. These make good gifts for many occasions, and for a lot of us, handcrafted gifts are preferable to things which are made overseas. Be careful when you create the lovely long burning objects and use common sense as well. Bear in mind that you must not imbed anything which would burn; this is sensible. Most of all, just have fun, be careful, and be sure you test and label all of the handcrafted creations you make.

You might want to try gel candle making for fun or even for profit. You can make gel candles because they are clean-burning and contain no oil by-products. They can be made at home and sold at craft shows or swap meets. Making gel candles will necessitate buying a double boiler, a good thermometer, a long spoon made of metal or plastic, color, and perhaps some fragrance. Mineral oil is used to make the candle instead of conventional wax. You must also have safety goggles and a fire extinguisher, gloves, and an apron.
