Transforming An Ordinary Dresser Or Cabinet Into A Modern Bath Vanity
Multifunctional Contemporary bathroom furniture just like the vanity is fast becoming a bathroom trend because it is a good storage area that also holds the mirror and sinks. Unfortunately though, not every homeowner could afford a bathroom vanity especially in these tough economic times. However, if you really want to have your own bathroom vanity, you may want to consider bringing down your old cabinet or dresser from your attic, and make it a vanity project that you would surely enjoy making. Below are simple steps that you could follow to achieve a modern looking bath vanity made from your old cabinet or dresser.
Making antique dressers or cabinets into modern bathroom vanities, whether a double sink or single vessel, requires few and easy alterations. All you need are the following items: a cabinet or dresser, saw, sink fixtures, pencil, plumbing fixtures, screws, sealant and paint, L-brackets, anchors, and drill. To get things started, measure the size of your cabinet in order to know the size and type of sink that you will use. If you want to save yourself from expenses, you could still use the sink that you are currently using in your bathroom. However, removing an old sink would only eat your time as it is laborious, so it would be better to purchase a new sink which would also complement the modern vanity design you want to achieve.
Once you already have your sink, set it aside for a while since it will not be used on the initial stages of your vanity construction. Focus first on your cabinet or dresser by removing all its drawers, and at the back make a hole where you will slide your sink plumbing. As modern bathroom vanities are stand alone fixtures, make sure that you properly measure and mark the plumbing on your wall before you make a hole so that it would properly correspond to the cabinet or dresser once it is put in place. If you're done making the holes, sand the rough edges of the holes to create a professional finish.
To achieve the look of modern bathroom vanities, you have two options when installing your sink. First, if you're using a traditional sink or your old sink that sits flat on the counter, begin tracing the opening of the sink on the top of your cabinet, and then cut this opening with a jigsaw. For the second option, if you're going to use a bowl type sink, make sure to read the instructions contained in the package of your sink that concerns the plumbing hole, and then follow these instructions when cutting the hole. If you're done cutting, test fit your sink, the drain fittings as well as the plumbing connections.
After fitting, remove the sink first and paint your cabinet or dresser in accordance to your bath space's color scheme or depending on your preferred color. If there are some modifications that you have to attend to, be sure that you do them all before painting your cabinet and before your permanently position your sink. Once your cabinet is dry, start making holes on the wall where you will permanently attach your contemporary bathroom furniture, place the L-brackets and anchors that will support your vanity, and set your furniture on its right position. Then, begin installing your sink.
In order to properly position your sink on the countertop, flip your sink over and place a sealant around the inside lip. After doing this, carefully place your sink to the vanity and then wipe away the excess sealant. Lastly, install the water supply lines. You can now enjoy your homemade modern bath vanity.
Modern bathroom vanities are among the most sought after contemporary bathroom furniture pieces in the market today. Aside from their beautiful designs and finishes, they are also revered for their functionality. If you want to have your own modern bath vanity but you're a bit short on budget, don't worry you can create your own vanity from your old cabinet or dresser. All you need is a bit of creativity and some tools to aid you in your project.
